When we bought our house, 23 years ago, the stairs came with the same rug on them that was throughout the house. After years of people going up and down them, there was no way to keep them clean. This project is one that I didn't tell my husband. While he was at work one day, I had had enough of the gross rug on the stairs and it never looking good so I decided to rip the rug off the stairs.

Well, this right here is what he came home to. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't beautiful wood underneath it, but I had a vision of what I wanted, and I knew that with a lot of work, we could do it. To start, I went to Floor and Decor. I love this place when it comes to flooring. They had a solid wood tread that would make this stairwell look perfect.https://www.flooranddecor.com/stair-parts/red-oak-retro-retread---48in.-100942598.html
I then got to work taking the rest of the rug off the stairs. Underneath the rug was a layer of dirt; no wonder I couldn't get them clean. The plan was to replace the treads with solid wood and stain it to match the tile that was downstairs that we had installed earlier. Because we had tile leftover from the flooring job we would use that tile on the risers.
The first part of this, removing the tread and replacing it was hard work. It took us to days of using a crowbar and a sledgehammer to get them up one at a time, starting at the bottom. We removed the old one, cut the new one to fit, then installed the new one. Over and over again for 21 steps. It was a long weekend and my husband was the VIP for this one.
For the landings, we had to use three of the tread and cut the front off of them with the table saw to fill in the space. Once this was done, it was my job to make it look pretty, as my husband said. I used Liquid Nail and the tile cutter to get the risers done, which went very quickly, only taking a few hours. Then once it had dried, I stained the wood while everyone was at work or school, giving it time to dry. and then finally used teak oil on it to seal it. Now I do have to go to it every year or so and do the teak oil again, but this is totally worth it to not have slippery stairs.

I couldn't be happier with how they match the downstairs floors and are so much easier to keep clean than the rug. Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and go for it in order to get what you want.
