For my son's 8th birthday, he requested Minecraft. Again, since his parties aren't at the house but with a few good friends, we usually go someplace to celebrate, unlike his sisters, who I would throw at the house with games, prizes, food, gifts, etc... For this party, like his others, I wanted to throw a little mommy decor into the party to take it from being a pizza party to a Minecraft party. To start his party, we had it at a local small mom and pop pizza parlor, instead of a big chain restaurant. This is so much better because they allowed the kids to each make their own pizzas and then took them into the back and allowed them to put them in their machine that cooked them. Of course, there were arcade games and such as well, but all the kids and adults thought it was cool that they got to literally make their own pizzas.

To get the theme started, I made the invitations with a Minecraft theme. I decided to make them special by using an exploding box model to create each invitation. While it was time-consuming, there weren't that many friends he was inviting, so to make it special, we hand-delivered each one to his friend, which he really enjoyed watching them open them, and he got excited each time one of his friends saw the invitation.

For the cake, I went with a simple design of a square cake decorated to look like it was in the Minecraft world. I had found these jewels at Dollar Tree in the floral area that looked like jewels in Minecraft, so I placed them around the base of the cake. The cake itself, I used buttercream and fondant to make the details. The grass was a grass tip with green buttercream frosting, and the 8 was dried fondant with toothpicks in the bottom. The Minecraft guy is just a toy that I had ordered on Amazon, which he still has today because, like any good 2000s kid, he is still playing Minecraft.

For the party favors, I made Minecraft boxes out of cardstock and put some of the jewels that were on the cake, and Minecraft toys inside of them. I also made M&M sticks with a creeper on the top for each guest, as M&M is my son's favorite candy, so it was a match made in heaven.

This is just a reminder that just because your kid dreams up a party in their head that they want, and it's not something that you can buy that with a little creativity, you can create the items that can make the party everything they dreamed of. If your kids are like mine, they did it for every birthday, and it became something that they looked forward to each year, picking their theme.
